Fragile hair can often be frustrating, as it leads to breakage, split ends, and slow-growth. My daughter and I both have fragile hair that grows pretty slow, and through trial and error, and years of experience, we have found some awesome methods that boost our overall hair health and counteract the effects of breakage. So whether you have naturally brittle hair, or chemically treated hair, here are our best tips!
Hair oiling/scalp stimulation
This step has been the biggest game changer for us! A couple hours before washing my hair, or sometimes the night before I will apply this Rosemary + Castor oil combo to my scalp and use the scalp massaging brush to massage the oil into my scalp. Not only does it feel AMAZING, it stimulates hair growth and a healthy scalp. I then cover the ends with a deep conditioning treatment, wrap it up in a bun and put on my silky bonnet to maintain the moisture until its ready to be washed.
Choose the right shampoo/conditioner
Invest in products that are high-quality and high-hydration. The goal is a nourished, lightweight texture that won’t feel or look greasy. We personally use Pureology’s shampoo and conditioner, and have found it to be super effective.
Wash less frequently
Washing your hair too often strips it of its natural oils, leading to increased fragility. I aim to wash my hair 1-2 times a week, using my favorite dry shampoo to revitalize in-between washes.
Be gentle with heat
Heat styling tools can contribute to hair fragility. If you are noticing a lot of breakage, consider air drying your hair, or using the lowest setting on your blow dryer. As for curling irons and straighteners, use the lowest heat possible that still works for your hair. You may be using the highest setting without needing it! We also religiously use this Pureology leave-in conditioning spray as a heat-protectant.
Supplements/nutrition
I can’t emphasize the importance of this enough! Our bodies need essential vitamins and nutrients to enrich not only our hair, but our skin and nails as well. We call this “healing from the inside out!” A well-balanced diet, proper hydration, and a boost from supplements can help greatly with weakened hair strands. I’ve linked my favorite supplements with a boost of collagen and biotin in the list below!
Support products
There are so many great products that are there to contribute to our hair’s health! From gentler elastics, to hair masks, to silk pillowcases, I’ve included all of these and more of my absolute favorite products in the link below.
